February Favorite Things

R.I.P. February.

It’s that time again!

Da-da-da-daa!

Splendidly, Kait’s February Favorite Things:

Song: Body Music – AlunaGeorge, Body Music

AlunaGeorge_-_Body_Music

As you know, I’m an editorial intern at Nylon magazine, and in our forthcoming April issue there will be a review of British Electro-R&B duo AlunaGeorge’s second album, I Remember. Fact-checking the AlunaGeorge story for the April issue sparked my interest, and I downloaded a few songs to check out their sound. I am now obsessed.

AlunaGeorge is so unique and sonically different that I’m hooked. They’re brilliant. Definitely check them out if you like artists such as Majid Jordan, FKA Twigs, even Marina and the Diamonds. “Body Music, ” which is also the name of their debut album, has a pulsing and moody tone that works in perfect harmony with Aluna’s airy voice. Ugh. It’s just so good.

Accessory: French Fries Lunchbox

Yes, lunchboxes do count as accessories, mind you. Bought at Targét, this thing is meta AF. I’ve never been so happy to pack my lunch in the morning!

Movie: Deadpool

deadpool1

My brother is obsessed with Deadpool and the entire Marvel Universe, and has been waiting for this movie for about three years. It finally came out on February 13th, and I went home for the weekend just so I could go see it with him. He, my mom, and I were probably three of the loudest people in the theater, but it was one of those movies where you can’t repress any immediate emotions. They just have to come out.

Deadpool is seriously in my top 5 movie list, and if you haven’t seen it, go see it now. But not if you’re easily offended. If you’re easily offended this movie is not for you. Seriously. Don’t go.

Food: Shrimp Dumplings

Processed with VSCOcam with c3 preset

Do you ever go through phases with food? In February, my phase was shrimp dumplings. My friends and I go to the best dining hall on campus 4-5 times a week even though its the farthest one from us because it never disappoints. Ever. I don’t really eat sushi, but one Friday when I wasn’t eating meat (What’s up, Jesus) I decided to venture over to the sushi bar and I saw those beautiful little dumplings.

Now I’m addicted. I brought 11 with me to Nylon one day for lunch and ate every one.

Someone stop me please.

“Black people are more than a people who come from slavery. We have more than one great hero. We have been visionaries. Scientists. Astronauts. Inventors. President of the United States of America. And everything else under the sun. That history is for everybody to know.”

This quote is from a Teen Vogue article written by Bené Viera that was a response to Stacey Dash’s delusion that we don’t need Black History Month. Viera’s piece is really, really moving, and if you want you can read it here.

Lipstick: Colourpop’s Ultra Matte Lip “LAX”

[Worn in photo] I wore this shade for a photoshoot I did with my friend Jonelle, who is an aspiring photographer (look at most of the shoot here y’all she’s honestly so talented). I’ve only previously used Colourpop’s Lippie Stix, but now that I have seen the light of the Ultra Matte, I am never turning back. It’s actually flawless.

Thing I Learned in School:

This semester I am taking Intro to Creative Writing: Fiction and Poetry, and a few weeks ago in class we were talking about how to build pressure in your story. We read a analysis piece by George Saunders on the short story “The School” by Donald Barthelme, and this little gem of a passage made me almost laugh out loud in the study lounge.

“Einstein once said something along the lines of: ‘No worthy problem is ever solved within the plane of its original conception.’ Touching on the same idea, a famous poet once said: ‘If you set out to write a poem about two dogs fucking, and you write a poem about two dogs fucking, then you’ve written a poem about two dogs fucking.'”

Don’t write a poem about two dogs fucking! Switch it up, be unpredictable in your writing, surprise yourself! Throw a third dog in that last stanza and make the poem about three dogs fucking!

Pair of shoes: Tommy Hilfiger Rain Boots

Unfortunately, it rained a lot in February, but my trusty Tommy Hilfiger rain boots always had my back. These things are comfy and resemble a moto boot, so they’re not hard to style whatsoever. They save my life. Because God knows what lies in those murky NYC puddles…

Clothing Item: The Future is Female Crewneck

Screen Shot 2016-03-01 at 2.33.25 PM

I got this crewneck for my birthday back in December and wore it a few times in the months following, but I wore it a ridiculous amount of times during the month of February. It seemed like I was washing it every week, but I couldn’t help myself. It’s fleece on the inside and political on the outside. What more can you ask for from a sweatshirt?*

I’m actually wearing it as I write this post.

And eating shrimp dumplings. Hehe.

*Sidenote: MARCH IS WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH! LET’S GET IT, LADIES.

Tweet:

Choosing February’s favorite tweet was SO HARD OH MY GOSH. So I picked two.

Hey, my blog, my rules. 🙂

My roommate Selam and myself, taken by my other talented photog of a friend, Chioma (check her out, too, my friends are just way too talented) for a project she is doing. Doesn’t this picture just scream #blackgirlmagic to you? It does to me. Taken on February 19.

Day: February 18

FEB18

I performed my spoken word piece “Lethargy” at NYU Gallatin’s Say It Loud! Showcase of Black Arts and Activism on the 18th (Last month’s Favorite Day was related to a Gallatin event, too. I obviously just love my school way too much). I was surrounded by so much black excellence it was mind-boggling. Being able to share that stage with so many gifted people, being given a platform to speak out as a Black artist, and celebrating Black History Month through this showcase was extremely cool. A shitload of my friends came to see me and my parents even came into the city from Jersey that night just to attend the event. I have the best support team in the world.

This photo was taken after the showcase with my friends LZ, Selam, Gabby, and Jonelle. That day as a whole was filled with positivity, laughter, and happiness in its simplest form.  Now that was a great day.

Wishing you the absolute best going into March!

Splendidly,

Kait
